Excellent question Geri. The reason for 2 bats is to try and acheive the look of trapunto without all the extra labor of traditional machine trapunto, which would be to load the top and one layer only of batting on the rack, outline quilt trapunto motifs with water soluble thread, then all the trimming away and then reload on the rack with the backing and thin batting and do all my quilting. Some LAers are finding they are getting very close to that look with only half the work. I follow blogs of some LA quilters and it seems quite a few are doing the double batting to try and get different looks. Two that immediately come to mind are Greenfairy and Charisma. Because one of the bats is a poly it should hold it's shape and "puffy" factor after washing. At least that has been my experience with most polys I have used in the past, they really don't lose the puffyness. I sure hope that is the case with this quilt anyway. 99% of my blue marking is coming out with a simple spritz of water from my spray bottle but it will need a good soaking to ensure all the water soluble ink is out.
The quilt is not mine to enter in a show but I do believe the owner of this quilt may have plans of entering it in a show. I hope so, even if it doesn't win anything I'd love to see a picture of it hanging up in the show hall.
