I have the same tension problem with my brother so i match thread on my Futura it does not happen but yes you can use a marker i have fabric markers but you can use a sharpie to do it if you can't match exact color use one like a high light or low light it will be fine no one will notice if you don't tell after the markers or fabric paint but it is more work
