my old standby is a bar of Ivory soap(not dish liquid). Wet the stain with cold water(only cold) and rub with a wet bar of Ivory soap. Rub the fabric together around the stain to get the soap through the fabric and stain and rinse with cold water. You may have to repeat. You can also leave the Ivory soap in the stain until you wash the item, it won't hurt anything. I find this takes out most stains including ballpoint pen ink. Sometimes with old stains it takes a couple of times of treatments or it might not work if too old and set in.
