while she "recommends" using things, it does not mean you "have to"...some don't use the tools, and some can't do it without them!
I do NOT use the index card like she shows, but I do use the 1/4" and even 1/8" ruler...for more than just paper piecing! I found that you can flip the paper up next to the ruler edge and use your nail to crease the paper just fine without the card attached!
