Sharon, there are a couple of tricks. The dial on top needs to be turned, the stitch button pressed and the appropriate needle position and stitch length(tells you on the button) are selected. Do you have a manual?

I have a 1222E, love my machine. I'm the second owner and so glad the first owner took such good care of it. I haven't figured out how to make it do all the decorative stitches that it is supposed to be capable of. I use it mostly for piecing flannel quilts, binding most of my quilts and sometimes machine quilting.
