You won't get the same effect if you make the size of the pieces bigger. I would buy the queen and add borders. I had the same struggle about size a couple of months ago before I started the Surf Song bargello by Eileen Fisher. The quilt pattern is the right size for the bed, but without borders. I couldn't decide if I wanted to leave it the way it was written, change the size of the strips, leave out some fabrics, add borders... what a thought process!! I polled a couple of quilting friends and finally decided to make as the pattern suggested. I am about half way through and it's a stunning quilt. Looking forward to seeing it in it's entirety.
