You won't get the same effect if you make the size of the pieces bigger. I would buy the queen and add borders. I had the same struggle about size a couple of months ago before I started the Surf Song bargello by Eileen Fisher. The quilt pattern is the right size for the bed, but without borders. I couldn't decide if I wanted to leave it the way it was written, change the size of the strips, leave out some fabrics, add borders... what a thought process!! I polled a couple of quilting friends and finally decided to make as the pattern suggested. I am about half way through and it's a stunning quilt. Looking forward to seeing it in it's entirety. I had to look up the Surf Song Bargello. It's a lovely quilt. Hope to see it when you are finished. I'm hoping to get the queen size pattern and will have to add some borders to make it fit the king size bed. It will probably take a while to get all the fabrics together. LOL. I think it is 24 or 26 fabrics. Good luck with your quilt.
