Well, first of all I'd remove the finish and re-stain it to a more correct darker finish. That light finish looks like stripped ply wood to me.
Second, I'd fix the mounting holes on top.
Third I'd put a semi-modern machine in it. One with a reverse and perhaps a zig-zag.

Actually the cabinet is much prettier than the picture shows even with the light oak color. I rather like it. The plan is to fix the mounting holes and mount a sewing machine head, just need to find one that will fit those very small hinge holes.
