They do sew fairly well, but are made very cheaply.

Cathy, why not jut put a knob on the balance wheel? Good for one crank around anyway - keep a kid happy and busy. I suppose the trick would be to get it to come out straight. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FEATHERWEIGH...item2c62f937d4 seems like a stiff price though. Has to be a way to do this for much less money. Maybe a window roller part...
