I lived in Japan for three years, and love your quilt, it looks so very Japanese - I think the bamboo leaf border is perfect, with just a few blocks thrown in randomly help keep if from being too predictable.

I don't think the pattern detracts from the center at all, it is almost a glitzy neutral, very true to the Japanese design sensibility and the black tonal strips keep it from getting too wild and rambunctious. Now when you finish it, just PM me and I will give you my home address
