Thank you, romanojpg, for this link:
http://www.freesierrasoftware.com/ I had forgotten about them, would love to learn to digitize and am thinking of taking the plunge with this - looks like minimal investment. Debra Jones of My Embroidery Mentor has a tutorial available also and the way she does tutorials, is probably quite helpful.
To edit or change machine ext., I have used Edit and Stitch from Amazing Designs ($199) and it lets me do all the changing patterns to proper extensions, resizing, coloring, and I even have the pattern up on my laptop when I am stitching it out to see what is going to stitch next and color. Remember, too, when doing colors - you may have a color on the screen, but it is the color of the thread you load that is going to stitch out. If you have purple on your screen and you decide to sew it with yellow, put a yellow spool on sew, you don't need to go back and physically change the color. What is important is where it is sewing. My Brother machines only have the black and white screens that are not very helpful. Also, I rename the files too when I save them, once you have downloaded the pattern, the vendor's numbers etc. don't mean anything to anyone else - it helps me keep my sanity! :-)
