I tried! We looked at both of those sizes of metal conduit, PVC, copper piping (unrealistic, but we were getting desperate) and NOTHING (pipe-wise) was the right size to fit into the rod ends. For those of you who have the machine, the black rod ends are very specially designed and they just weren't fitting. The fiberglass pipe they provided was 1 1/8" outer diameter and 15/16" inner diameter when I measured, which seems to be a bizarre size to find in a store...
