I just love these school quilts. When my youngest was in 6th grade, his teacher, Mr. Porter asked me to help the kids while they paper pieced 4 squares each of pine trees. They choose which fabric the wanted to use as well as which tree patterns (we had a selection to choose from). I learned how to paper piece or foundation quilt, but most importantly I learned that each child, even the ones that drove you crazy, was a wonderful creative person and fun to work with. That was the gift for me. I sewed the 4 blocks into one square and scanned them. Not only did each child then have a realistic picture of their quilted work, but I made a key to the quilt that showed which child had made the squares. It was a wonderful experience. I really like the crayon quilts, too.
