I like using just three fabrics for a D9P, though I tend to make my first border a different color. Here are three pictures. The first two are cat-sized for my mother's cat, but the last is a twin size. In each I used a focus fabric that was one directional, but once I figured out how to do that, the rest was pretty easy.
