Smile Hello, I'm new to the forum.

I have been quilting for a few years but tonight I was trying to figure out how much backing a quilt my sister-in-law made needed and realized that each time I do this it is by laying out the quilt and laying my fabric on the quilt, (I have a few large yardages I have in my stash), and visually using the actual fabric to figure it out.
I know there are formulas to figure out what you need for fabric of various widths, 42", 44", 104" or what ever it is. I am not sure what those formulas are. Does anyone know of an easy formula to figure this out? Thanks. I appreciate the help...
btw/ the quilt she made is 82 w X 102 l and fabric is 42"

Also, does it matter if the back is pieced vertically or horizontally?
