I also agree with the suggestions for a 10 inch block. She probably has the picture in mind and anything that goes too far off her mental picture, no matter how beautiful, might disappoint.
Buy the quilt from Pottery Barn for her and make one for yourself with those gorgeous fabrics you bought. She's not going to appreciate all the work and $ that go into a handmade quilt. Just sayin'
