I think the thing that makes scrap quilts too chaotic sometimes is if there isn't a light background, or at least a solid color for your eye to rest on.. if it's all just a jumble of color I find them less pleasing than if there is sashing or a background to give it some peacefulness in the midst of the scramble.
I agree with everything you said. I, too, LOVE Bonnie's site & want to make almost every quilt there (her "Streak of Sunshine" is THE best, fastest baby qult EVER -- I've made it half a dozen times).
I also agree that a scrap quilt needs someplace quiet. I like to use a common background or accent fabric in each blocks -- something to give it a little continuity.
