I understand doing that for when you are in the center of the quilt surface, but when you're quilting off the edge, why wouldn't you just tie the knot and leave it to be under the binding? It seems to me that my mistake was that I should have tied the knot while I was still on the very edge of the quilt top instead of sewing into the backing and batting that would need to be cut away. But I am a somewhat new quilter and appreciate learning the best way to do things.
