I put a piece of veneer over the entire top. Then I took my Dremel tool with a cut-off blade and trimmed as close as I could then changed to a round sanding disk to get closer then finished by hand sanding. BTW a cut- off blade is a small flat disk a little over 1inch in diameter and you mount it on a shaft, turn on the tool and let the blade do all the hard work. I overlapped the edges and sanded closer with round sanding disk and hand finished. My initial cuts for the whole sheet were make with my cutting mat, rotary cutter a long straight edge ruler. Cut everything oversized so you can trim later.
