I'm reading this thread with great interest... not because I'm going to be making any baby quilts in the near future, but because one of our fabric sales reps is forever telling me to go look at Pottery Barn Kids to get ideas. I just checked their website again, and I'm seeing a whole lot of pastels among their offerings, plus some browns, reds, and navy. But nothing jumps out at me as being "really bright".
I think as long as you don't go all blue or all pink, you'll be fine!
