I used a "Demel" tool. A small hand-held tool that allows you to do many operations. It has a small buffing wheel that you can apply polishing compound to and away you go.
I have been thinking that I need to buy a Dremel tool. Now, you have convinced me. You have done a wonderful job restoring the cabinet and sewing machine.
