My guess would be the "smell" is in the rubber seal in the lid. Do you have a dishwasher that you can run everything thru to see if the combo of really hot water and detergent would help? another thought is to leave them outside in the sun/fresh air for a couple days and see if that helps.
activated charcoal is supposed to remove smells also. Seal the lids in a container with it.
