Now this is news to me. How would I shut down a flash drive? I just pull it out while the computer is still on. Are you saying I should wait until the computer is off?
Depending on the drive and your computer, it may require that you physically "close" or "eject" the thumb drive before pulling it out of the USB port. I know that with computers where I used to work, you had to place your cursor over the thumb drive icon and 'eject' it. You couldn't just pull it out, otherwise some files could be corrupted or lost.

On my iMac, however, I can just close the file and pull the thumb drive out without losing files. However, again, I just have to make sure I close the file I'm working on COMPLETELY before yanking the thumb drive out.
