Joe, my guess when I first saw that motor was the port is for grease, as in Singer lube. I have a couple of motors that use it, and it just looks so similar. But you use your best judgement...you have lots more experience at that than me, as I already admitted!!
I asked the same question of another forum member that I've been buying needles from and he sent me a link to a 20s vintage New Home manual. It says use oil. They do look like grease ports but Oil it is.
