I have Vista and down in the lower right there is an icon that pops up when ever a flash drive is plugged in. When I get ready to take it out, I click on the icon and it closes the flash drive/files and tells me when it's safe to disconnect. Be careful and don't just pull the plug for digital cameras, Ipods, any hardware you plug into the computer.
