I have Vista and down in the lower right there is an icon that pops up when ever a flash drive is plugged in. When I get ready to take it out, I click on the icon and it closes the flash drive/files and tells me when it's safe to disconnect. And double thanks for mentioning digital cameras, because I do the same thing with my camera, and even after you mentioned about flash drives, it didn't occur to me that the same thing would be true of other devices. Duh, but I really appreciate you saying it!
