when I was in junior high, we saw a filmstrip (remember those?) about accents in NYC. Depending on your accent, they could tell your neighborhood. Like tirty tree for "33"?(a Brooklyn nabe) or berl in erl for "boil in oil" (Green Point or green pernt if that's where you lived.). Nowadays, neighborhoods are so changed that these accents are lost. Of course, because I live in Manhattan (not the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn), I do not have an accent (LOL)
