I made several "portable chalk boards" for kids a few years ago based on a pattern by Nancy Zieman. The kids loved it and the chalk fabric worked quite well. One mom would take them for her kids to draw on at a restaurant and always had wait staff and other customers stop by the table and ask about them! I think her kids just wore them out.
