Sometimes low contrast quilts work just fine. It's the blended look and several books were written on it. If your Gran picked out the fabrics then she must love them and I would hesitate to introduce anything too bright or dark.
I agree... sometimes subtle is the way to go. I remember a quilt on Fons & Porter that was super low contrast (it was a sideways tumbler strippie pattern... Rosie Something?) & I LOVED it! I say go for it. As I get older, I like things quieter, too... LOL!
