I think you did a fine job and I love the Toile! I'm self taught also...still learning...you are right...I think this is a difficult hobby, but I still love it even when my stuff doesn't turn out "just right". I think thats the best thing about it...it doesn't have to be perfect to still look good.
I like your simple pattern and can't wait to see how you finish it up!
