This is what I do, too. Tear the paper down the center to the stitching line, then tear toward each end. Works much better. Also fold at the stitch line, moisten the stitch line...all these things help remove it. I usually use tissue (tracing) paper to do paper piecing & that goes through the copier fine and tears off really easily.
