I quilted a quilt with one of those for my aunt. I very carefully pulled that flange back and quilted right up to the seam but I never quilted over it. Well, I did once but I removed those stitches. If you sew it down I don't see why you couldn't quilt over it. That way your hopping foot never gets caught.
