Well, I don't know if it's nutty...lol
A 12" block means that each square in the 4-patch would be 6" and the alternate block would be a 12" white square. Why don't you take some pieces of the fabric you plan to use and just lay them out in the approximate size and take a look.
The 4-patch happens to be one of my favorite blocks and it is so easy. The trick is in pressing the seams so they nest when you assemble the block.
