What if you just did not have that, wanted to use a certain piece as backing, but it came up a little short, but covered all the quilting area. Could you add a cheater piece that would be cut off later if you double seamed (like jeans seams) to make it sturdy? I think this would work as long as the backing wasn't exactly the same size as the quilt top. I think you'd need the backing to be an inch larger on all four sides, just to be safe. And you wouldn't need to double seam the extra fabric; a normal seam would work fine.
