When my children were babies (long, long ago) I usually used a diaper as a burp cloth. Of course diapers were made of cloth back then, in the dark ages. It needs to be thick enough to absorb any spit-up. I think the good quality flannel backing would be enough thickness. You don't want something so thick that the gunk will get deep inside and be hard to clean.
