I use a thread stand a lot. The ones with a heavy metal bottom and a tall metal arm work very well. I also have used 5000m spools, and the thread stand is invaluable. It works fine in my Bernina 440, my Featherweights, and even my vintage Singer 99 hand cranks! I actually have 3of he stands because I generally keep 3 machines threaded up.
