A thread stand should work great as long as it is sturdy. I have one of those cool flower stands and it works great. I do shove a piece of scrap batting inside the cone and then over the post to keep it more stable as the thread unwinds. You don't want the cone to tip to one side or the thread comes off at an angle and not straight up off the cone. When the cone tips the tension on the thread changes. I like to piece mostly with a medium grey thread so I rarely need to change the cone. I also make about ten bobbins at a time for less interuption.
