IMHO The black lines would take away from the child look you'd want for a 6yo and it'd start looking too adult-like.
Why wouldn't you go with applique? .... layer the fabrics on and satin stitch in matching colours around the edges. Of course, it could be all hand applique, though for a child you might prefer the durability of the machine stitching.
