Flannel would probably work well as both foundation & batting in one. Good idea; I'll be interested to see how that works for you. It's surprising how much weight is added by the zillions of seams from all that piecing.
I just sewed the string strips onto flimsy paper, pressed and cut to size with an 8.5" square, then removed the paper. Sewed four of them together, with the light sides joined, ending up with 16.5" final size square.
