I learned that it is best to use a small and sharp needle for batiks since the weave is so tight. A smaller sharp needle penetrates easier and also doesn't leave such a big hole. In machine piecing batiks I use a 70/10 sharp and in LA quilting I use a 16 sharp and So-Fine or Omni thread. No problems.
