I would see if it would fit their dining room table as a tablecloth first. It would look great with the wood showing through the designs. If they don't have a table big enough, I would then stitch it down to a larger dark whole cloth quilt. I would use a large stitch with matching thread colour and carefully stitch it to the completed whole cloth quilt, that way it could be moved later if desired.
