I made the star quilt up out of two basic blocks and an applique pattern. I strip pieced the segments for the nine patches out of 2 1/2 inch strips, put them together in to 6 1/2 in blocks and then cut 6 1/2 squares of the blue. Using the same fabric for the big blocks and the secondary color of the nine patch is what makes the irish chain. pattern.
