I have always used wool batting for hand quilting. The lanolin in the wool makes it very easy to needle. A few of the ladies in my guild are huge hand quilters and they were the ones who recommended the wool, and as much as I love to quilt on my longarm, I will probably always use wool for hand quilting because it does make it much easier.
