I have used the monofilament in the top stitch of my regular sewing machine and regular thread (to match the backing) in the bobbin. I have to make sure that the thread winds upward - not sideways. You may want to put a net over the spool to keep it from unraveling. For the quilting machines I have heard mention that the tension needs to be decrease just a bit. On the TinLizzie for example, the gal wound the thread through only 2 of the loops. All you can do is try. Good luck.
