I was wondering if it weren't a type of 9-patch variation? At first I thought maybe it was some type of "Greek Cross" but I dunno. Whatever the pattern, it's absolitely adorable! I'll bet your friend is thanking her lucky stars that she brought you back into the fold... LOL!
