When I planned my quilt[s], I wanted to keep the original block size but increase the overall size of the quilt. So I made my sashings 1" finished. To keep the same 'shape' of the triangles [same angles], the side triangles ended up being 8.75x5.5. Since you already have some of your triangles done, perhaps you could look into adding 3/4" to the bottom of the triangles. then, trimming straight along your sides, that will make the base 5.5". Does that make sense?
