I've notices some of the finer hotels also have them now. My thought was, it protected the bedspread from feet and also if you sit on the foot of the bed, it provides a barrier to the bedspread. Just a thought...
This is what I would use them for. It is the same protection that a scarf offers to the neck of a coat-easily laundered more frequently as well.
