I did want to add, that last night I found another option

Many patterns do not have quilting suggestions, they just say "bind and quilt as desired" so it was nice to see their suggestions at the end.
I'm still undecided what I' going to use, but the thought occurred to me that a large flag could be the BACK of the quilt.
Can you tell this soldier is special to me, though we have never met, and probably never will?

I have met his mother, and now I'm thinking of including something in the package for her. I know first hand what us moms of servicemen go through, and to have a son injured, so severely, has got to be....I don't even have words for it.

My son just got out of the Navy a few days ago, luckily, uninjured

I'm thinking of just sending the 2 items to the mom, with a note addressed to her son, with his quilt. I'm also going to included a note to her that I know first hand what someone with a brain injury goes through, and being his mom, she would know best whether this would be a welcome gift. Brains do funny things
