I had one made for my MIL by one of her students at the local tuberculosis sanatarium many years ago. It was black and white checked gingham Scotties appliqued on white squares. Three decades later my DM set it with (almost) matching gingham strips and black cornerstones. It was all cut on the grain, the dogs were cut with the straight grain level with their backs. I did one similar to that but instead of scotties, I embroidered antique cars on it for my DS. It's around here somewhere. I want to rip the quilting out (I hand quilted back in the day when I wasn't very good) & re-do it. I like the car squares but wish the gingham wasn't a blend. I love gingham, but wish it was 100% cotton. Oh & I just cut it. It was somewhat "uneven" but back then I didn't know any better.
I also made a Sunbonnet Sue for a friend of mine which had Sue's dresses made from red & black gingham.
