Suddenly I realized, I do that ..... except I sew mine at 1/4" .... as I add it to the quilt.

Honestly, I don't believe in doing extra work if there's no need ... I've never had any problems in getting it to lay flat. All I do is cut it, join the strips, then press in 1/2 and I'm ready to go!
